Appropriation Art is blue
Appropriation Art defines an art form that deals with the copying of already existing works of art. The lines of development of Appropriation Art reach back to the
early 20th century and find their roots, for example, in the readymades of Marcel Duchamp, in Pablo Picasso, in Giorgio de Chirico and finally also in Pop Art.
Representatives of Appropriation Art include artists Sherrie Levine (born 1947), Mike Bidlo (born 1953) and Philip Taaffe (born 1955). They assigned themselves this
term in the early 1980s. In a broader sense, however, the term Appropriation Art was used for all quotations within postmodern art, which is why the designation became increasingly blurred. In
order to classify a work as Appropriation Art, several criteria should be fulfilled: firstly, the temporary framework should be limited to the 1980s. Secondly, the intentional, thirdly, the
conceptually elaborated use of a copy or quotation must be recognisable.
When artists work according to the principles of Appropriation Art, they pursue their copyist activity along different strategies. Mike Bidlo, for example, made
detailed repetitions, but he did not use the original work as a model, but always copies. In Sherrie Levine's oeuvre, on the other hand, there are photographs that in turn reproduce photographs
or reproductions of works by other artists without alteration. Furthermore, on a theoretical level, Appropriation Art always touches on the discourse of the reciprocal relationships between
original and replica.
Other artists who can be counted as belonging to the circle of Appropriation Art because of the techniques or concepts they use are Allan McCollum, Stephen McKenna,
Carlo Maria Mariani, Elaine Sturtevant and Rosemarie Trockel.
Yves Bleu was confronted very early on with works by Yves Klein, Mike Bidlo and the works of Elaine Sturtevant and positioned himself stylistically.
